ISN DUE THURSDAY OR FRIDAY!

Aloha,

Wanted to make sure everyone remembers that the students' ISN (notebooks) are due either Thursday or Friday (before Fall Break).  The gradebook will be closed Friday at 3:00 pm and I will not be accepting any additional work for Quarter One.
If your student is going to be absent, please be sure they submit all work to me prior to leaving.
Thank you for your consideration!=)

Skyscapes

The 6th Graders built a Skyscape using various measurements (mm, cm, inches) and were required to use a straight-edge (ruler) for all the lines. Each building had to have a sign, two windows, and a door. Everything had to be labeled properly. Some of the groups were quite creative in their designs! I was very impressed with how hard the students worked and how well they worked in their groups. I absolutely love this measuring mini-project~turned out better than I had hoped! Good Job 6th Graders!

Welcome to School Year 2016-2017!

Aloha Waikoloa School Ohana,

I wanted to personally welcome you back to school this year and extend a warm Aloha to all!

This is going to be a fantastic year, with many new learning experiences, and opportunities for growth.

I look forward to facilitating your child's academic progress this year!

Does your student need additional support? Are they struggling to get their assignments done?

Does your student need additional support? Are they struggling to get their assignments done?
Here is what you can do to support their learning:

1.  GO SEE THE TEACHER:
All teachers have "office hours" on Mondays after school where students who need help, have questions, or want to do their work can attend any class. T/TH usually is reserved for meetings, however if I do not have a meeting, then I am available until 2:45/2:50. I give up every morning and lunch recess to assist the students who want to come in for tutoring, questions, extra help, or a place to do their work: this is not a requirement, I choose to do this so I can help the students. All the students know this as it is announced in class constantly as well as told to students individually.

2.  Students should work on their assignments during class when we are doing them, and ask questions at that time if needed.

3.  Students need to understand that they need to be responsible for their own learning/education and that does include completing assignments, sometimes outside of class time.

4.  Students have from the time we do the assignment in class until the notebook assessment to complete them, which affords them plenty of additional time. Once assessed, we allow students who received a D/F to redo/resubmit for additional credit (not full credit if it is after the deadline). There are usually notes on the pages indicating what is missing or questions, these should help guide them while redoing the assignments.

5.  I am very conscientious about ensuring students have their notebooks to study before quizzes, hence if the student was resubmitting I would have indicated that they pick it back up after school or lunch recess to ensure they have it.

****As a reminder: The students are taking their notebooks home today to study for the quiz (either Wed or TH) and completing all the lab assignments if they did not do it during class. Those will be graded at the end of this week

Notebooks ~ assessments

Helping the students to realize their responsibilities is a daunting task, but a most do.  The majority of students are NOT completing their assignments (in class or at home) and after assessing their ISNs, I decided they needed to reflect upon this AND COMPLETE all the missing work.  They were given extra time to complete the work and resubmit it to me today (Friday).  Whatever grade they earn this time is the one that sticks (goes in the gradebook).  Hopefully the students took responsibility for their own learning and completed all that needed to be finished.

Hints to help your student be successful

Hints to help your student be successful:
  • Your student's planner will tell you what was assigned to be finished at home.
  • Your student's notebook will show all of her/his actual work.
  • The front half is the reference section which contains all the requirements and how to complete various tasks, i.e. ALL left side pages are output and must have a minimum of 4 meaningful/significant colors; all pages should be dated and numbered in the top outer corner.
  • So if you do not know what she/he needs to complete, you can look there for these types of standards.
  • The directions are usually on each assignment, however we sometimes make minor changes, which she/he should have written on that assignment.
  • All students should have all work completed through page 41 as of today.

How to help your student be successful...

There are many different options for parents/guardians to stay on top of their student's academic progress.
  • You can check the class BLOG (all teachers have one).
  • You can check your student's planner as all teachers require students to write their assignments down in every class.
  • You can check teacherease-if you do not have access, please contact your student's advisory teacher.
  • You can review your student's Interactive Science Notebook (all pages should be dated and numbered; all pages should be completed; many pages have bell work in addition to the assignment).
  • You can email the teacher (many times that it much faster than a phone call as teachers are in class all day and meetings after school, but could squeeze in sending a quick email; many teachers will respond to emails outside of school hours, i.e. 11:00 pm).
How can your student work towards success:
  • Your student can call a friend from school if she/he doesn't understand an assignment ~ (in the AVID class it is required that all students get 5 phone numbers of students they could call for help).
  • She/he can come in at recess for extra help.
  • She/he can attend Monday office hours (after school 2:15-2:45).
Tag teaming is always the best approach ~ if your student knows you are in touch with the teacher and you know what is happening in class, your student is more likely to be responsible for their own learning.

Hopefully these strategies help all of you be successful!
