7th Grade Science this week and next week

Good Afternoon,

This week in Science we created our front cover for our ISN, which should be filled with Science-related drawings.

The Rubrics should be completed (text marked with 2 different colored pencils and smiley faces).

Students used a hard copy handout of the Cell Theory to take Cornell Notes, which should also be completed.  We watched a video on The Cell Theory in class today.

The Cell Theory Timeline was supposed to be done by the end of class today, however there was a fire forcing the entire school to evacuate the classrooms for approximately 20 minutes, therefore I felt it only fair to give the students until next class, which is Wednesday.  The timeline should be in color (at least 4 colors) and all the information is within their Cornell Notes and the Handout, in addition to the video we watched in class.

Wednesday we will start with Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells---powerpoint presentation and students will be taking Cornell Notes. Students will be processing content information via a Yes Ma'am "chant" (they will create their own using the provided template).  Then they will complete a structure and function worksheet.

The following class we will be starting Cells, beginning with a pictorial.  Students will write in content while I draw it, write it, and reivew it, on a huge triple-wide poster.  He will need his colored pencils (which he did not have today).  After two classes students will be creating their own cell using an analogy (my example will be that of a Cookie Factory).

Hope this information helps!

Welcome to 2017!

Aloha Science Ohana,

Welcome back to school.  We have some exciting content coming up in both 6th grade and 7th grade Science, which will include labs, reading & writing, and projects.  The content will become more challenging as the semester moves forward so it is critical your student stays focused and on top of their work.

Continuation Assignments may possibly be daily, for example if your student does not finish the assignment during class, then they will need to continue it (and finish it) at home.

Students should have a new spiral with them the first day of class along with their supplies (colored pencils, colored pens, tape, glue, pencils, pens, packing tape, etc.).

We started out class discussing the new semester, everyone has an A and it is their job to maintain that A---FRESH START!

Today students completed their Scoring Rubrics (marking text with 2 colored pencils, circle key terms, underline important facts, adding smiley faces).  They wrote their Table of Contents, which I supplied to them.  They glued in the first 4 pages in their new ISN. Finally, they worked on their Doodle covers (using a minimum of 4 colors, all pictures need to be science-related, and important information written in black sharpie).  Some students may need to finish this at home.

Looking forward to a fantastic second semester!
Ms. Duell

Wonderful winter Break and Restocking Supplies

Aloha Waikoloa Science Ohana,

For all those who celebrate the holidays-HAPPY HOLIDAYS and I hope you all have a wonderful Winter Break!

In January,  students will need a new spiral notebook as well as packing tape for their new Science ISN covers.

Would be wonderful if you could restock your student's school supplies (colored pencils, tape, glue (liquid or stick), scissors, pencils, ink pen, colored markers, and white out) over the Winter Break.  Students should have these items with them every day.

Mahalo Nui for taking an active role in your student's academic life!=)

Science Missing Assignments

Just wanted to inform you that students have until Monday to submit all assignments...many are missing several!  If you look on teacherease, you will see various scores: 40= did not turn in; 50= turned in but earned 50 points or lower; M = missing, never turned in and will convert to a 40 if not submitted on Monday.

All the information and instructions to complete assignments is on Google Classroom.

I have left the latest Content Assessment in the gradebook with their actual scores so you will be able to determine if they need to redo and resubmit their work.

Period 5 students were suppose to pick up their ISN at lunch today so they would have them over the weekend to redo-about half the class did not come and pick them up, making it a challenge for them to redo their work.  Students will have to pick them up on Monday and complete all work that afternoon and resubmit before school on Tuesday!

School supplies

Aloha Waikoloa Science Ohana,

When you have a moment, please check with your student to ensure they have all the necessary school supplies with them every day.  They should have colored pencils, tape, glue (liquid or stick), scissors, pencil, ink pen, and their ISN.
*Might be a good idea to restock over the Winter Break.

Thank you!

Happy Thanksgiving!

For all those who celebrate Thanksgiving, have a great holiday!
Hope everyone finds some time to spend with loved ones and time to rest.=)

ISN pages 11/23/2016

Just wanted to make sure students are all caught up before we return to school on Monday.
Students in periods 1 and 2 should have pages in their ISN completed through page 63.
Students in periods 4 and 5 should have pages in their ISN completed through page 61.

Science ISN pages Due

All 7th graders should have completed all work/pages through page 69 by the time we return to school on Monday, 11/28/2016.

Students should utilize their time away from school to get caught up.

We will start a new lesson on Monday (11/28/2016), so it is important that students have completed all previously due assignments.

Also, most students did not either pass or complete the Biomes Quiz; they should do test corrections and re-submit it as soon as possible.

Update 6th grade assignments

I was surprised when assessing the students' content knowledge and lack of assignment completion this week. It appears that many students chose not use their time wisely during class.

They had three weeks to complete mass, weight, volume, density assignments; 2 weeks with the guest teacher as well as last week.  We did Geodude in class, which is the model for their project. Geodude should be completed. Their projects are due on Monday; they have had 3 class periods to work on it.

If your student focuses during class and stays on-task, your should be able to complete everything during class. *If your student is behind, they will need to work at home until caught up.

If your student has questions about the assignments or anything else, they can ask during class work time or come to after school office hours on Mondays after school.

Update for 7th grade assignments

I was surprised when assessing the students' content knowledge and lack of assignment completion last Friday.  It appears that many students chose not use their time wisely during class.

Every assignment is on Google Classroom, which includes the instructions, links to resources, attached documents, and the due dates. We reviewed the lessons in class when I returned from medical leave.

Students had 5 weeks to complete their building blocks; they were due before Fall Break but I allowed them time to do them over break but they were to turn them in the first day back. The guest teacher did not collect them so they ended up with an additional 2+ weeks to complete them. Upon my return, I gave them a few more days. There is no reason for those not to be finished.

They had three weeks to complete the Carbon Cycle and the Nitrogen Cycle; 2 weeks with the guest teacher as well as last week.

We have moved on to Ecosystems and Habitats; there are four activities and a small project. They should have been done with the third activity yesterday. We will start the fourth tomorrow. Again, all on Google Classroom.

If your student focuses during class and stays on-task, your should be able to complete everything during class. *If your student is behind, they will need to work at home until caught up.

If your student has questions about the assignments or anything else, they can ask during class work time or come to after school office hours on Mondays after achool.
