Tomorrow is our STAR Math test. Have your children go to bed early tonight, eat a healthy breakfast in the morning, and come to school on time.
Mahalo for all the kind letters, drawings, flowers, fruit, and gifts for Teacher Appreciation Week!
Our fourth quarter STAR reading test is tomorrow. Make sure your child gets plenty of rest tonight and a healthy breakfast in the morning. Mahalo!

Here's a photo from Tuesday night. Check the HVO's status report to read the latest update on Kilauea. Have a great weekend!
This week we've been working on the geometry standard of reasoning with shapes and their attributes as it relates to fractions. They have partitioned circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, described the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and described the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. They have also recognized that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.
Our guest speaker, Jen, from the Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative came and spoke about the importance of preserving and restoring the Waikoloa Dry Forest. Visit the website, http://waikoloadryforest.org, to learn more about their mission and volunteering opportunities.
The students have been working hard at filling in the hundred chart to earn the reward of lunch in the classroom with me! As we ate, we listened, lip synced with our forks, and sang aloud to different songs. Ask them what songs we listened to!
In art, we learned about Vincent van Gogh and his journey as an artist. The students had the opprotunity to sketch and paint sunflowers like van Gogh! Ask them what they learned about van Gogh from the video on Monday.

Hawaii Food Bank

We are collecting canned food donations for the Hawaii Food Bank now and through the remainder of April.

This is a class contest! The class who donates the most food (by weight) will win a Pizza or Ice Cream Party.

Contest Ends on May 1st. The weigh in will be Monday May 4th.

ClassDojo

Thank you to the parents that are signing up for ClassDojo. Some of the students are having trouble changing their avatar. Here is what I found from the ClassDojo help desk:

From the web:

  1. Create a ClassDojo student account at https://student.classdojo.com/#!/find-code OR login to your account at https://student.classdojo.com
  2. Make sure you have entered the student code your teacher gave you
  3. Click the yellow "Make your avatar" or "Change your avatar" button on the left of the screen.
  4. Your avatar creator will appear. Click the arrows to the left or right to change the body, color, eyes, mouth, and feet!
  5. When you are finished, click the yellow "Save" button in the top right of the screen!
  6. You will be prompted to "Enter your parent's email" to make sure your parent is aware of your use of ClassDojo

From the ClassDojo for Students app:

  1. Download the free 'ClassDojo for Students' app for iOS or Android
  2. Create your ClassDojo student account using your unique Student Code
  3. Select "Enter parent email" to make sure your parent is aware of your use of ClassDojo
  4. You can now customize your avatar!
If you are still having trouble, let me know and I'll see if there is something more I can do. ~Mahalo

Update

Check your child's Thursday envelope for his or her report card envelope. Please sign and return both envelopes on Monday.

I also sent home a note explaining ClassDojo with access codes for both students and parents. It is a new behavior management system I will be trying out for the rest of the year. It is my hope that students will be more motivated to focus on learning while self-monitoring their own behaviors.

I have added KidBiz3000, BrainPOP, and BrainPOP, Jr. to the links page. Students have permission to use these websites at home. I will add usernames and passwords to their planners next week.
