We jumped right into our math curriculum on the first day of school! The students are learning our math routines and we've even started math centers! Math centers allow me to work in small groups to help meet the needs of all students.
Our school uses Thinking Maps as a way to help students visualize their thinking because it helps them with critical and creative thinking.
During the first week of school, our class created a social contract. The following questions guided our discussions to create it: 1. How should I treat you? 2. How should you treat me? 3. How should we treat each other? 4. How do we solve conflict?

We went over the school's "In the Classroom" rules to reinforce the expectations for behavior in any classroom on campus. We then used a Thinking Map to compare and contrast these expectations and our social contract.
We've been in school for a busy two weeks and I've finally caught my breath! Our class is off to a great start and I know we'll have a productive and successful year.
We've been learning all about sharks! Dive into our shark album to see more photographs of students learning about sharks!
Mahalo nui loa for the thoughtful letters, yummy fruit and cookies, and gorgeous leis and flowers for teacher appreciation week!
If you are able, please stop by Waikoloa KTA on Monday, May 7th to drop off donations for the evacuated residents of Puna. There will be a table collecting donations from 3:00-7:00pm. If you cannot make the designated time, you can send the donations to school with your child tomorrow and I will drop them off for you. You can also find this list and more information on the Puna Diaster and Relief Facebook group page.

Today's Earthquakes

We had two earthquakes today. The first one was at recess and the second one happened while we were working on an art project in the classroom. As soon as I heard the projector screen rattling, I directed the students to get under their desks. We waited it out until it was over. They did a nice job and seemed to handle the experience well!

In Social Studies, we have been learning about our country’s laws and our own rights as citizens.  Students made posters of what Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Assembly, Freedom of Religion, and Freedom of the Press means to them with illustrations and written examples!  GO U.S.A! ~Mr. Jerry
