Course Description
Kumu Lani is our primary source for Hawaiian Studies on campus. While she delivers first hand knowledge of content, other primary sources include members of the community and local organizations. Secondary sinclude internet, power point, textbook and library resources. Hawaiian history themes lend themselves nicely to cross-curricular connections as well. Most work will be completed in collaborative groups within the classroom, however we do have field trips outside our classroom and we strongly encourage families to participate in Hawaiian cultural events hat help students to better understand their place. We have a partnership with the Waikoloa Future Foresters and encourage students to participate with their group free of charge every other weekend to get actively involved in preserving our ancient Waikoloa dry forest. Community contribution is not graded, however it does prepare students to be college and career ready. Projects will be assigned third quarter. Our curriculum is rich in content and in the spirit of our place, we welcome community members to participate in teaching and learning.
