Description
Kumu Lani is our primary source for Hawaiian Studies on campus. While she delivers first hand knowledge of content, other primary sources include members of the community and local organizations. Secondary sinclude internet, power point, textbook and library resources. Hawaiian history themes lend themselves nicely to cross-curricular connections as well. Most work will be completed in collaborative groups within the classroom, however we do have field trips outside our classroom and we strongly encourage families to participate in Hawaiian cultural events hat help students to better understand their place. We have a partnership with the Waikoloa Future Foresters and encourage students to participate with their group free of charge every other weekend to get actively involved in preserving our ancient Waikoloa dry forest. Community contribution is not graded, however it does prepare students to be college and career ready. Projects will be assigned third quarter. Our curriculum is rich in content and in the spirit of our place, we welcome community members to participate in teaching and learning.

Assignment

Paao and Lonopele: Read the text and answer the questions. Please note that  there are errors re: paragraph numbers in the vocabulary section. See attached for the edited version. Due to a guest speaker, we were unable to start this assignment in class until the end of the day, so students would not have had an opportunity to compare and contrast the double hulled and single hulled canoes (not a standards-based question, only an opportunity to observe and think). They did get to see the `ama (or arm of an outrigger) was made of Wiliwili wood. Both hulls were made of koa. We will read about what the sail and sennit was made out of next week.

For social studies, students need to relate at least one story of migration. This particular story was told as it also is a could lead into the class system and kapu system and explains where it came from. It also is relevant in the future in that Kamehameha was a descendant of the Pili line of chiefs, his wife dared to challenge the kapu system and his son ended it. The last priest and adviser to Kamehameha was a direct descendant of Pa`ao. Waikoloa is also mentioned in the story who also is mentioned in another legend having carried water to Waikoloa from Waiki (water fetched).

Due:

Assignment

Parents must sign all materials in the Thursday Envelope. Points are awarded to students for returning important items and and for turning in their assignments on time as part of the General Learner Outcome: Self-Directed Learner.  If you need help filling out the forms, or if your child needs additional homework support or modifications and/or you do not have access to Homework Lab, A+ or other, then please contact Ms. North or Ms. Coble via email or by phone so that we can work out some time before or after school to assist. Your child's planner is also an excellent way to communicate. We want your child to be college and career ready. Students may attend study hall to work on assignments during recess, but that time is so limited and we do encourage physical exercise as do colleges who want students to be well-rounded, healthy and involved in their community (*see Social Studies). Also PLEASE SIGN YOUR CHILD'S PLANNER DAILY.
