Aloha!
ABOUT ME:
I am the migrant education preschool teacher at Waikoloa this year. I have been a certified teacher for over 10 years, all of which have either been in preschool or kindergarten. I am not new to Hawai'i or Waikoloa, but did leave to teach preschool overseas in Morocco last year. It was a wonderful experience, but I am happy to be back!
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT PLAN:
1. Routines and Procedures:
a. Arrival: Teachers will meet families for drop off in the cafeteria between 7:45 and 8. Parents sign them in. Kids have breakfast, then walk in a line down to the preschool classroom.
b. End of Day: Kids will have recess at the end of the day at the kindergarten playground . Teachers will walk kids from the playground to the front of the library where parents pick them up at 2:00 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, 12:45 pm on Wednesdays, and 1:00 pm on Fridays. Parents sign children out. *The pick up location is the same as the kindergarten pick-up location. Parents will not pick-up their kids at the playground this year.
c. Children are provided with a consistent daily routine that is posted with visuals in the classroom where children and teachers can see and refer to it.
2. How We Develop and Teach Behavior Expectations:
a. Problem solving techniques are explicitly taught and modeled.
b. Daily routines and expectations are taught from the very first day of school, and repeated daily. Routines and expectations will be posted as visuals for the children and teachers to refer to.
c. Redirection, close proximity to adults, first/then, and token boards will be used if students need additional support in following the routine and behavior expectations.
3. Strategies to Encourage Positive Behavior:
a. Focus on what kids are supposed to do, rather than on what they shouldn’t be doing.
b. Catch them doing the right thing. “I notice you are…..” “Thank you for….”
c. Rewards/incentives/treasure box to encourage positive behavior.
DAILY ROUTINE and INSTRUCTION:
Children will participate in literacy, math, recess, and center/choice time daily. Center and choice time will be a rotation of activities that will include dramatic play, blocks and toys, a sensory/discovery area, puzzles, writing/drawing, and art. In addition, children will participate in structured resource classes with an additional teacher, to include library, fine arts/music, and physical education weekly.
Instruction in math and literacy will take place in both large and small group settings.
