Aloha and welcome to Mr. Blackburn's First Grade class. Here's a little about me:
First off, I love my job!  I genuinely enjoy being a teacher and I appreciate the opportunity to play a small role in helping these kids on their journey through their education. This 2021/2022 school year will be my 11th year teaching first grade at Waikoloa Elementary.  Every year has been  amazing in so many different ways, and I expect this year to be amazing as well.  I have a wife and two kids who are my everything.  We love playing at the beach, going hiking or other outdoor adventures.  I enjoy running, yep, like actually "enjoy" it haha. I do most of my running around the village, but as often as I can, I love running the amazing trails we have on this beautiful island. Now you can tell your first grader that you know something about their teacher!
I really look forward to working with my new first graders this year. We will make the best of whatever this year brings our way. Mahalo for your support and an especially big Mahalo for all that you do for your child.
Mr. Blackburn

Yesterday was 'Read Across America Day'. We had a class of 8th grade super readers come and read books with our first grade class.

Online supplement

Today your child should have brought home a letter about a online program called Mobymax.  It has directions and a username and password for your child.  This is a free program and can be accessed anywhere that has internet. There are a variety of learning activities to boost learning.  After a certain amount of time in the program, 'fun' things like games can be unlocked and game minutes can be accrued By spending more time in the learning activities. I encourage you to get your child on this program often.

Dont forget to do your moon journals this week. Turn it in next Friday.
Have a great weekend!

Moon journals were sent home with the kids today. The instructions are inside, but the basic idea is they observe the moon every night (or morning), draw what it looks like, then turn in their moon journal each Friday. Have fun with this!
Yesterday our students presented their projects to the class. Each student told about 100 collection and demonstrated how they had organized (groups of 5, 10, 20 etc). Everyone that finished their project did a great job presenting. Thanks for your support in their efforts. We also finished our reading challenge. While we didn't set a new record, we did exceed our initial goal of 100 books. In 1 week our class read 151 books! Fantastic job everybody!
Friendly reminder that we have no additional homework this week. Your child's homework is to work on their 100th day project, due Thursday. Also don't forget to encourage your child to read and fill out their "reading train cars" to help us reach our goal. We do have a spelling test this week so a new spelling list was sent home with your child today.
This project is your child's homework between now and next Thursday. Please help your child with it, but let them do the majority of the work. It is due next week sometime before Thursday. There will be no other homework sent home during this time. Mahalo!
Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful break and holiday season. Here are our spelling words for this week. Good luck!

Winter performance tonight!

Please be at the cafeteria by 5:20 tonight so we can get settled in before the performance begins. Students will need to sit together as a class. We hope to see you there!
