Ms. G's Second Grade Class!

Posts

In their free time, some students took the initiative to create a 3D representation of Hawai'i as they envisioned it before any explorers arrived.  So creative!  It's now on display in the school library.

Happy spring break!  Yesterday and today we wrapped up our inventions/engineering unit by making protective vehicles for eggs to drop 20 feet and stay safe!  Here is a picture of the students at work in teams.

This week we got to start a brand new reading curriculum!  Though more rigorous than Trophies (the old curriculum), it is definitely more engaging and hopefully will help prepare our readers for third grade and beyond!  More info to come in Thursday envelopes.

Today we learned about some famous inventors and their inventions And practiced making timelines.  Make sure to ask your child about them!

Welcome back!

Welcome to third quarter!  I hope everyone had a fantastic winter break!  Here's an idea of what we will be focusing on this quarter:

Math:  starting off the quarter solidifying our understanding of place value

Reading:  as always, we are pushing ourselves to improve fluency and comprehension

Writing: we are starting off the quarter working on opinion/argumentative writing

Social studies:  This quarter we focus on political science

Science: Engineering!  Hopefully a fun project or two.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions!

November 18-22

There will be a substitute all week while I attend Orton-Gillingham training to learn how to better differentiate reading instruction since our class is at such a great variety of reading levels.  I'm excited to bring new ideas and learning tools into the class when I return!

Spelling words this week are a review:

Economics!

This quarter, our social studies unit is on economics.  we are working towards mastering the following standards:

1. Categorize resources as natural, capital, or human

2. Explain scarcity and its effects on daily life

3. Compare the roles of buyers and sellers and explain how they depend upon each other

At the beginning of the quarter, we learned all about the different types of resources (natural, capital, and human) and how to identify them.  Last week, we started a Plate Lunch Store project, in which the kids had to buy ingredients to make plate lunches and then put them together in their own stands and assign prices.  Now, the students are allotted an amount of money to purchase lunches from themselves for four days.  After we're done, we'll find out who made the most money and discuss how and why!
