Welcome to the 2023-2024 School Year!

Here we go again! I wish everyone a wonderful, fun, exciting, and AMAZING school year!

Migrant Backpacks and supplies are here! If you would like your child's backpack before school starts, please come to my classroom Friday, August 4th in J Annex J101XC and have your child choose their very own backpack. If you don't come Friday, I will have your children come to my room sometime during the first week of school to choose one. The backpacks are AMAZING. So many choices. Migrant funds pay for the backpacks and supplies for all migrant students, and we are excited to offer these to your children.

EL Families, we will have after school Imagine Learning classes again this year. The application will come home within the first two weeks of school! Be on the lookout!

Let's all make it a GREAT year!

Aloha,

Aloha and Welcome to the 2021-2022 School Year!

I am so happy to be at Waikoloa School! My Hawaii-Teaching-Career started in Kohala in 1993 as a substitute. I taught in Seattle for 18 years before moving here. How did we get here? My husband did work for Mr. Dowsett in Seattle and was asked to come to Kohala to build the inside of his Hawaii house. It was only supposed to be a two month job, but because of the weather they were behind on the house and Bob stayed for the year and helped build from the framing to the end. Our son, who was just out of kindergarten, and I went back to Seattle. When the house was finished, Mr. Dowsett asked if we wanted to live in their O'hana house and take care of their 20 acres. I was all for it. "YES! I will take a one year leave of absence! Let's do it!" So, we did, and we never went back. :)

I taught 5th grade and then 4th grade at Kohala Elementary and then got bumped. Back in the day, teachers could get bumped by more tenured teachers. So, I applied to Waikoloa Elementary and taught there from 1996 - 2000. I loved it! When a position opened back up in Kohala, I went back and taught in the middle school until 2012. I loved it there, too! After the crazy recession, we moved to Waikoloa because of my husband's job. I was planning on commuting to Kohala when we moved, but a language arts middle school position was open at Waikoloa, so I applied for it. I was so HAPPY when I got the job - and SO THANKFUL.

I am so grateful for our time in Kohala. We lived there for a total of 19 years, and our son graduated from Kohala High School in 2004. I still go to the dentist in Kohala and visit my friends any chance I get.

I taught middle school language arts here in Waikoloa from 2012 until about 2017 when I decided to change things up a bit and become the EL Coordinator, the migrant ed coordinator, and an EL middle school language arts teacher. Change is always amazing! Today, my job is the followingEL Coordinator, Migrant Ed Coordinator, Title 1 with Mrs. Lumanlan, Distance Learning Teacher. #WOW The good news is that I am in love with my job.

I REALLY want to connect with all of the families I work with through ParentSquare. Our school is just now getting that program going. If you get an invitation to join, please do!

That is all for now. Please know that I support all children and families and am available to talk or email anytime.

I love this quote by Christopher Robin in Winnie the Pooh. To all students! You are amazing and wonderful for being who you are. For real. Please take this time to get to know yourself during this different time in our lives. Keep a journal if you'd like. You'll read it in 10 or 20 years and remember how we all stayed at home for two months so we could protect each other and Hawaii from getting the Coronavirus. As it says in George Harrison's famous song, "All Things Will Pass," this will pass, too. Do what you can to enjoy your family and keep in touch with your wonderful friends. Always remember what a wonderful person you are for being YOU ...

Week 3!

Dear Students and Families,

April 20th will start week three of Distance Learning. Students, your lessons are scheduled to post Monday morning. We meet on WebEx Monday at 9:00, Tuesday at 12:30, and Thursday at 10:00. I'm here for you all day though, so keep the emails and calls coming.

The lessons in Google Classroom are ideas to keep you and your brain learning and engaged! I miss seeing you in person, and I'm thankful that we have the technology that we do so we can see each other that way.

Winnie and Almen are reading to Ms. Mahin's kindergarten students! These 8th graders loved reading, and the kindergarten children loved the 8th graders coming to work with them. Win-Win!
I'd like to introduce you to Almen! She moved here from the Marshallese Islands when she was in 6th grade. When she walked into our 6th grade English Classroom, she knew very little English. You should hear her now! What amazing progress she has made. Almen wants to do well in school, and I love that she asks questions when she needs help. One thing I admire about Almen is how she helps others who need help, too! Almen keeps me on my toes when I forget to do something, and I really appreciate that about her. I wish Almen the BEST in whatever she pursues in her life.
I would like to introduce you to Shalliane! She is an 8th grader in our language arts class, and she keeps me on my toes. :) She remembers every detail of our routine and what I am supposed to be doing! Thank you, Shalliane.

Shalliane works SO well with helping younger students. I can see her becoming a teacher some day if that's what she wants to do. We worked with kindergartners last year, and I saw this first hand.

Shalliane, keep reading, keep trying, and keep your smile and positive attitude. You bring light into the room every day you walk through the door. I love seeing how much you've gained in skills and confidence the past three years. Keep going!

I'd like to introduce you to Jessie! He is in my 8th grade ELA class and HE WORKS HARD! I'm proud of his motivation and excitement to learn.

Our 8th graders are so excited to be in 8th grade! Last week they went on a two day trip to the volcano and had so much fun ... some of it was SCARY fun. haha Our 8th graders learned about different careers and took amazing hikes. They hung around with each other in a new way ... away from school.  I bet our students felt the bonding and this has set the year up for more SUCCESS and many lasting FRIENDSHIPS.

It's a GREAT year at Waikoloa Elementary and Middle School!

Stay tuned for my next student soon ...
ALL ABOUT US!

My students are making a multi-media poster about themselves, and we are going to be presenting to the class. We want to know each other! Support each other! Connect to each other!

IT'S GOING TO BE A GREAT YEAR!
Here we go again! I am looking forward to another AMAZING school year. At the Back-to-School-Bash, we gave away backpacks and supplies to our migrant ed students. We're trying to spread the word about the program! An application went out in the Thursday Envelope last week. When parents turn them in, I send them to Waimea and Ms. Bertelmann will contact parents who qualify for the program. If you have any questions, please contact me at 808-883-6808 x262.

I'm excited to be teaching 7th and 8th grade EL language arts classes again. The classes are small, so students get a lot of one-on-one help. We are focusing on academic language, reading for understanding, and will be doing a lot of writing, too. YES!

In will attach my welcome back letter in another post. In the meantime, let's MAKE it a GREAT year!

A group of 4th-8th grade English Language Learners will attend the West Hawaii Speech Festival on April 12th! It's going to be so much fun! We practice our parts every day. :) Pictures will be posted! Dyanna Robert, pictured here, will be attending with seven other 7th and 8th graders. Students, we wish you all a fun time and a great experience!
I wish all of my students and their families a FUN and RELAXING spring break! I hope you play, read, and get outside and MOVE! I will do the same!

Enjoy ...

I just LOVE LOVE LOVE how our school is supportive of ALL of our students! My specific job this year is working with English Learners and Migrant Ed students. We have Imagine Learning after school for all EL students. If you would like your child to join, we will give you a paper to sign your child up. We're working on having an afterschool program for our Migrant Ed students in the fall. #SupportingOurStudentsAllTheWay
